What is the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education & Skills)?
The Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) is intended for those who teach learners aged 14 and above in various locations and settings. For example, this could be in a college, a prison, a private training provider, the uniformed services, the workplace, or in community organisations and the voluntary sector. It prepares trainee teachers to teach in a wide range of contexts and requires observation and assessment of practice.
The TQUK Level 5 Diploma in Teaching replaces the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. The diploma qualification is comparable to the Certificate in Education (CertEd) and the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
This qualification is based on the Occupational Standards from the Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship.
Our one-year Initial Teacher Training programme is accredited by TQUK, following their Diploma in Teaching - Qualification Specification.
This qualification is suitable for:
- individuals currently teaching (including those who have just begun teaching) who can meet the practical requirements, including a teaching practice log, two teaching placements, and observed teaching practice requirements of the qualification.
- individuals who are not currently teaching but can meet the practice requirements, including a teaching practice log, two teaching placements, and observed teaching practice requirements of the qualification
Modules / Programme of Study:
The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching course is comprised of nine mandatory core modules (120 Credits).

- Module Two: Embedding your subject within your teaching role
- Module Three: Nurturing learner dynamics
- Module Four: Developing effective teaching and learning strategies
- Module Five: Fostering inclusive learning through resources
- Module Six: Embracing digital and online technologies
- Module Seven: Excelling when assessing learning
- Module Eight: Succeeding with professional pedagogical practices
- Module Nine: Evaluating and improving professional practice
Teaching Practice
This qualification requires 250 hours on placement, 150 teaching hours with age 14+ (a minimum of 100 hours should be in your specialist subject) and 100 hours in other duties e.g. meetings / CPD / observing others (20 of these hours should be at a second location).
Teaching practice should include a minimum of 20 hours of live remote teaching and a minimum of 80 hours of in-person teaching.
There will be 10 formal teaching practice observations. Each observation must be a minimum of 45 minutes and conducted by your tutor and/or subject specialist/pastoral support mentor. Up to two observations can be via a live remote delivery.
Two mentors from your placement will be needed to support you: a subject specialist mentor and a pastoral support mentor.
Total qualification time
This qualification is 120 credits which is equal to a total qualification time of 1200 hours.
Guided learning hours
Guided learning hours will be a minimum of 395. Learners are expected to study and complete aspects of their online portfolio in their own time. This additional time is expected to be approximately 805 hours across the programme.
Assessment
An online portfolio of evidence, including assignments, teaching practice observations and evidence of teaching knowledge, skills and behaviours.
A 30-minute professional discussion covering any aspect of professional practice
Entry Requirements
Learners must meet the following minimum criteria:
- 19 years of age and above
- Qualified or experienced in their area of specialism
- Able to demonstrate an ability to study at level 5
- Do not have a criminal background which prevents them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults. There may be a requirement by the employer for learners to be checked by the disclosure and barring service. The learner is responsible for seeking advice from their employer regarding this.
- A minimum of a level 2 qualification in both Maths and English before starting the qualification
- A suitable level of digital competency is needed to ensure they can meet the qualification requirements.
