Purpose

The purpose of “LEAD Mentor” in education is to focus on student participation within Mentoring, Learning and Development and to empower greater individual and collective involvement and engagement in their own learning which also supports other important aspects of their physical, emotional, social and educational development.

The LEAD Mentor Programme enables students to gain a Level 2 Award in Mentoring qualification designed to develop knowledge of mentoring, mentoring skills and practice and giving opportunities to develop and improve their skills. This will support students in further developing their understanding of mentoring and the skills and knowledge required to be a Mentee and or Mentor alike. It is suitable for students within School Council, Student Voice or within a Prefect Role, also this programme is great for students prior to or in employment who wish to develop their understanding of mentoring.

Aim

The aim of a LEAD Mentor is to learn alongside Essential Teaching UK to become part of a representative body for your school, supporting fellow students in representing their views on issues around teaching and learning. As part of effective professional practice, students are to be able to articulate their views and participate effectively in their learning and in the wider life of their school.

Students involved in the LEAD Mentor Programme will:

  • increase their rapport, communication, reasoning, organisational and listening skills
  • increase their confidence in talking to other students and adults
  • get enthused about positively influencing school ethos
  • build a valuable skill for inclusion in their personal portfolio

Engaging students as educational decision-makers is the practice of actively teaching young people responsibility for their education by systematically engaging them in making choices about learning, teaching, and schooling, in areas ranging from what affects them personally, to what affects an entire class, to what affects the entire school.
