Teaching is a very challenging, yet also very rewarding, profession.
We train and support those people who wish to improve their qualifications, future job prospects, or simply satisfy their desire to learn something new. The array of possibilities includes:
teaching languages, or English as a second language
basic skills training
teaching on vocational courses such as apprenticeships, foundation degrees and BTECs
delivering the training for specific professional qualifications
These are areas in which people continue to need quality teaching throughout their lives. FE learners range from 14 years old to adults, and although the majority are aged over 19, as an FE teacher you could work with a broad cross-section of people of different ages and circumstances.
What is the Certificate in Education & Training (Level 4)?
The programme combines teacher training and practical teaching observations. The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training prepares trainee teachers to teach in a wide range of contexts. It can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, including:
individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification;
individuals who are currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training) who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification;
individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification.
Our programme is your chance to use your creativity, personality and passion every single day, in an environment that’s challenging and rewarding in equal measure.
Further education (FE) encompasses all post-secondary school study. This makes for a vast range of training and career possibilities for prospective FE teachers. By completing FE teacher training, you can go on to open doors for a wide variety of students and help them realise their ambitions in a range of learning contexts.
Many people take on our programme to start a new career or develop the skills they need to jump-start their teaching journey. We do not require any prior educational or teaching experience but will be looking for you to demonstrate examples of our values and competencies, which will be assessed during the course.

The sector recognises the need for good teaching qualifications – FE training providers are all independent organisations that recruit directly to their courses, so they may specify particular requirements or eligibility criteria. There are three training routes available to become an FE teacher, catering for people with and without teaching qualifications:
pre-service – this involves gaining a teaching qualification with a Essential Teaching UK, with entry requirements decided by the specific college or training organisation
in-service – typically involves working within further education as a teacher while training part-time with Essential Teaching UK
transferring to FE – if you already have a teaching qualification, you can transfer to FE with a few additional steps and potential extra qualifications, all of which can be done with Essential Teaching UK
During application, you must meet the basic eligibility requirements as well as the teaching requirements for the curriculum area you will be teaching.

This qualification is suitable for individuals who want a qualification that focuses on practical teaching, and prefer a wide choice of optional units. Learners may already be teaching and wish to have their experience and practice accredited, or not presently teaching but capable of meeting the minimum teaching practice requirement of 30 hours.
It is designed for both the private training industry and FE Colleges, and covers the generic teaching skills that are required in becoming an effective teacher/trainer.
The course can also be completed via Distance Learning anywhere across the UK
